UC Entry Level Writing Requirement

All incoming students must meet the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement before they can enroll in Freshman Composition and many other courses. You can satisfy this requirement in the following ways:

  • by earning a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition exam.
  • by earning a score of 30 or higher on the combined English/writing section of the ACT Assessment.
  • by earning a score of 680 or higher on the writing section of the new SAT Reasoning exam,
    or on the old SAT II Writing subject test.
  • by earning a grade of C or better in a transferable college-level course in English Composition.

    If you have satisfied the requirement in any of the above ways, please send us your official transcripts/test results immediately.
  • by earning A score of 8 or better on the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). This exam is offered at UCLA once each term.
