UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools

Transfer Admission

The UCLA School of Nursing offers the following programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree:

  • Nursing - Generic/Prelicensure
    The prelicensure major (not for registered nurses or 2nd baccalaureates) is open to a limited number of junior transfer applicants.
  • Nursing - RN to BS/Post Licensure
    The post licensure major (for registered nurses) is open to junior/senior transfers and 2nd baccalaureate applicants only.

Applications either nursing program must fill out the general UC application for admission and a supplementary application with the school. For more information, contact the School of Nursing directly.

Generic/Prelicensure program

The Generic/Prelicensure Nursing degree program is intended to prepare entry-level nurses to care for patients at the bedside. The program has been developed according to the principles of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; moving from a systems, population-based approach to a cohort-based or unit-based perspective, and culminating with an intense focus on individual-level of care. Strong emphasis will be placed on clinical leadership and critical thinking skills.

Prelicensure Admission Requirements

  • 90 to 105 quarter units (60 to 70 semester units) of transferable coursework
  • a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in all transferable courses
  • Applicants from a California community college must fulfill IGETC. Others transfer students must complete the School of Nursing's general education requirements.
  • Applicants must fulfill the university's American History and Institutions requirement.
  • completion of prerequisite courses (listed at right) with grades of C or better

Prelicensure Course Requirements

  • human anatomy with lab
  • one year of general biology for the major (cellular and molecular)
  • one year of general chemistry for the major
  • one semester of organic chemistry for the major
  • introductory or general microbiology*
  • human anatomy
  • human physiology
  • introductory psychology*
  • introduction to communication studies or speech*

* these courses may be completed at UCLA


RN-BS/Postlicensure program

The RN-BS/Postlicensure degree program is intended to prepare RNs for advanced-practice study at the graduate level. The curriculum has been designed to build upon the student's associate degree education and assist RNs in gaining new knowledge needed for professional nursing in a changing society. Emphasis is placed upon the preparation of nurses to meet the need for community-based care in a culturally diverse society.

Postlicensure Admission Requirements

  • an Associate’s degree in nursing from a state-approved program or a diploma in nursing from an accredited program.
  • current licensure as a registered nurse and a minimum of one year of full-time experience as a registered nurse within the past five years
  • passing scores on required Excelsior College examinations:
    • Fundamentals of Nursing
    • Adult Nursing
    • Maternal and Child Nursing--AD
    • Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
  • 90 to 105 quarter units (60 to 70 semester units) of transferable course work
  • a minimum, cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all transferable courses
  • Applicants must fulfill the University's American History and Institutions requirement.
  • completion of prerequisite courses (listed at right) with grades of C or better

Postlicensure Course Requirements

  • human anatomy with lab
  • sociocultural anthropology
  • one or more courses from arts and humanities
  • one year in general biology with lab for the major (cellular and molecular)
  • one year in general chemistry with lab for the major
  • one year of organic chemistry for the major
  • two courses in English (composition, rhetoric and language, and critical reading and writing)
  • one UC-transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning that has a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher‡
  • introductory or general microbiology
  • introductory human physiology
  • introductory or general psychology
  • introductory or general sociology

‡ calculus is required for students planning to take chemistry at UCLA.
