Transfer Admission Guide 2013-14
These pages provide admission selection and coursework information for junior-level transfer applicants. Refer to Applying for Admission for information about how to obtain an application and application filing deadlines.
Although UCLA continues to enroll the most transfer students in the UC system, competition for transfer openings has increased over recent years. Strong academic preparation and performance are primary elements in our admission decisions. The average GPA of transfer applicants who are admitted to UCLA is is now well above 3.50 ( though GPAs vary by program), and most students who are admitted have completed most or all of the preparatory coursework for their majors. We give highest priority to students who are transferring from California community colleges or other University of California campuses. All schools admit for the fall quarter only.
The transfer selection review considers the following:
- Junior-level standing (60 semester/90 quarter transferable units completed) by the end of the spring term before you transfer.
- GPA of 3.20 or higher earned in transferable courses.
- Progress towards completion of major
preparation requirements by spring prior to transfer (see below).
There may be additional lower division requirements that students may complete at their current institutions or at UCLA. Should a major not have specific prerequisites, we expect students to demonstrate interest in academic study by completing coursework related to the major.
- Completion of the following course requirements by spring prior to transfer:
- Two transferable courses in English composition/critical thinking and writing.
- One transferable math course that has a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher.
- Four transferable college courses in at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences.
- Completion of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), UCLA general education requirements, or another UC campus's breadth requirements is highly recommended for applicants to the College of Letters and Science and the School of Arts and Architecture.
Applicants to the School of Theater, Film, and Television must complete one of the aforementioned general education paths.
Applicants to the School of Nursing and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to work towards the respective school's curriculum requirements.
Our review also considers personal criteria. The personal statement you submit with the application is the best place to discuss the following information more in depth:
- Employment while attending school
- Family responsibilities
- A return to school where early grades are not indicative of strong academic performance
- Involvement in campus organizations, student government, or clubs
- Community service
- Military service
- Circumstances that may have prevented you from achieving your highest academic performance

The agreements list all lower division course requirements for select majors at UCLA and other courses students can complete at their community colleges that satisfy these requirements.

TAP gives you the opportunity to enhance your ability to transfer to UCLA at the junior level from a California community college. Students are certified after completing the honors/scholars program at their community college and given priority consideration for admission to UCLA College of Letters and Science.

The University of California sends admission representatives to all California community colleges during the academic year to provide admission advising workshops on a variety of topics such as choosing a major, completing the undergraduate application, financial aid, and EOP/AAP. Visit your college's Transfer Center to schedule an appointment. UCLA programs include Community College Transfer Recruitment (CCTR) and the Student Transfer Opportunity and Mentorship Program (STOMP).

Transfer Applicant Reviewers
The Undergraduate Admissions Office reviews applicants to the College of Letters and Science. Applicants to the School of the Arts and Architecture; the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science; the School of Nursing; and the School of Theater, Film, and Television are reviewed by faculty members within the schools themselves. If you have additional questions regarding these programs, you should contact the schools directly.
