Schoenberg Hall and Dickson Plaza Schoenberg Hall (1955) is named for the late composer Arnold Schoenberg, a member of the music faculty from 1936-1944. This is the location of the Music and Ethnomusicology departments. Ethnomusicology is the only undergraduate major of its kind offered in the country. It is viewed as a field of study that seeks to understand the meaning and structure of music as cultural and intercultural phenomena, as well as the forms of individual expression. There are extensive practice and performance facilities, including a 525-seat auditorium. Free and inexpensive concerts are presented throughout the academic year. Placido Domingo has been a guest lecturer and presently he is an adjunct professor. Also, many Los Angeles performers (such as Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, the Eroica Trio) will give small "master classes" or free concerts in the afternoons.
